Hope you had a happy Halloween. We had a sweet time watching the delight in kids as they swapped candies and traded candy for toys at the Swap Shop on Halloween night. We sent a lot of toys out to new homes and built up a nice varied collection of candy for our Winter Carnival coming up in late January or early February.
There is a NO SCHOOL DAY for Portland Public Schools this Friday. This means that The Roost as well as the Swap Shop will be open for all ages play starting at 8am. If you have older kids (or younger) that would enjoy a larger space to hang out it, come on up stairs throughout the day.
This is a Labyrinth week with a nighttime chance to walk the meditative path, Thursday 7-9. Tanya’s Cuban food is on the menu for Friday night 6-7 (Details below on early orders for take home rice and beans) and Carolyn Winkler is performing on Saturday night 6:30-7:30.
Today, starting at 10AM is the first day to register for DoJump Winter classes.

NIA MORNING DANCE/EXERCISE CLASSES: Liz, who started offering NIA classes in the upstairs gym space at the beginning of October had a foot injury last week and took a break from teaching. She is back in action this week and looking forward to Tuesday and Thursday 9:30-11am in the upstairs gym. NIA is a very cathartic form of dance exercise that is great for body and mind. First class is free. After that, each session is $13 for the drop in rate, just $10 if you buy a five class card. Post to our Yahoo group if you’d like to try to work out a child care swap with another family so you can have your kids downstairs while you workout upstairs.
CALLING ALL COUCH COVERS: We have great couch covers for our couches in the Swap Shop and just regular sheets on the many Roost couches. If you have a spare couch cover, chances are, at this point, we have a couch it will fit. You can leave covers you have at home but aren’t using between the two couches in the Swap Shop. We will add them to the mix while you add to your swapping karma.
KEEPING OUR VACUUM WORKING AND OUR CUSTODIANS HAPPY: Kim, one of our wonderful custodians, has requested that we do a better job picking up the scraps that fall to the ground in the arts and crafts room. Our vacuum is getting clogged up on occasion and she is also having to clean before she cleans many nights (which takes her away from other cleaning). For her sake and ours, please check the floor before you leave if your kids have been in this room and pick up any crafty scraps.
ORDERING RICE AND BEANS (AND SALSA TOO) FOR YOUR FAMILY: If you are trying to simplify your life you may want to get a regular relationship going with the Mead family and Fela’s family orders of home cooked beans with rice. This is an easy week to start since they will be at The Roost kitchen on Friday night and you can pick up an order of beans and rice to go after you stay and play a bit. If you call Tanya by Thursday 503-349-9991 she’ll have your order ready. The pot of beans costs $20 and should feed you and your family for a day or three (depending on your appetites and numbers) and equates to approximately two liters of cooked beans with approximately 2 liters of Basmati white or brown rice on the side. The beans are pressure-cooked meatless, dairy-less beans. Bean varieties include:
Black, Garbanzo, Red, Black-eyed Peas, all colors of Lentil, Split pea. Ask for Salsa too ($4 a jar.) It’s terrific.
WINTER DO JUMP CLASSES AND SECOND FALL SESSION OF BABY CIRCUS: winter term registrations start today, Nov. 2 at 10am for kid’s and adult circus arts classes at the Echo Theater off Hawthorne and the gym space at Sunnyside Methodist Church building across the street from SES. Winter break morning camps the week of Christmas and the week of New Years for kids 5+ are $155 a week. Regular winter term classes are January 11th – March 20th. Baby circus classes going on now are open to limited drop-in participants. These classes are on Wednesday mornings in the gym Oct. 28 – Dec. 9: 9:45-10:30, ages 12-24mo. & 10:35-11:20, ages 2-3yrs. Anyone interested in dropping-in to a class, call DoJump at 503-231-1232 by 5pm the day before. More class info at www.dojump.org.

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD BUSINESSES: VELOCE BICYCLES on Hawthorne. Look for a bicycle themed Roost sponsor email later this week. Demitri, of Veloce Bicycle, has been in the bicycle business for over 20 years. He’s seen all the ups and downs and found a niche that he loves. He’ll be educating me on what our many neighborhood bicycle shops specialize in so we all know where to go for what we need in family and adult cycling.
