As a parent I don’t think about dentists/orthodontists too much . . . just a few times a year when I’m trying to remember if everyone’s gotten their twice a year check ups and then a whole bunch during that one extended period of time when my youngest, Claire, chipped out part of her two front teeth and went through a series of caps and root canals.

Until I sat down this week with our newest Roost sponsor who is the new pediatric dentist in our part of town, it hadn’t occurred to me that dental professionals make lifestyle choices just like families do. We choose the kind of neighborhood we want to live in and raise our kids in. We make decisions every year about the price point at which we are going to seek shelter, eat food, take vacations, etc.

Other than the color of the walls or whether or not there is a fish tank in the lobby, all dental offices looked alike to me so the dental “lifestyle” hadn’t really struck home. But it does now.

Dentists and orthodontist have a lot of choices to make about how modern their office equipment is, how modern or old school their practices are, how much they are going to up-sell money making procedures that are more cosmetic than medical.

Dr. Aaron Tinkle started his tenure at Belmont Family Dentistry last year in the offices of a retiring dentist at 60th and Belmont. He knew the way he decided to practice would attract a certain slice of the local families and adults. Makes me smile when he says, as a family man himself with a little toddler, that his Swap Shop families are just the kind of patients he was hoping to attract – a friendly group of folk who are an equal mix of patients with insurance and us self employed, creative types that manage to budget for a reasonable amount of dental work.

He stays away from selling fancy toothbrushes or cosmetic treatments and just focuses on good family health not at the lowest prices in town but not the highest either.

You can bring your young ones along on your visits for those first few check ups rather than make them a more costly appointment of their own. Paula and her front desk crew happily take them off your hands after they’ve taken a ride in the chair and said “Aaaah” so you can get down to business and (as much as is possible with a few extra things in your mouth) relax.

Claire’s favorite part of my appointments is the medical gloves they let her take home after playing like she’s the dentist for awhile.

His offices were a step back in time when he first took over and the renovations took awhile but digital imagery is in place and those spittoons at the sides of the old dental chairs are gone (remember swish and spit?). Paula and Dr. Tinkle can tell you tales of working through the renovations. I always had to weave around to find where the latest temporary lobby was but it was great to see their renovated space evolve. My favorite part is their “new” multicolored lobby countertop made from all sorts of recycled items melted together.

Some of you may recall that our first pediatric dental sponsor was all the way up in Vancouver so you may be as happy as I am that, when Dr. Jenna Milot was deciding where to start her practice fresh out of residency at OHSU, she saw a gap in services in our part of town.

There were no dentists retiring in our area when she needed to make her choices so she has build Sprout Pediatric Dentistry from the ground up in a great little area at 14th and Morrison.

Believe it or not, before she went back to dental school she was an international studies major earning a living as a cabinet maker, a skill that came in handy when taking a shell space to dentist office.

Kid’s places often err on the side of over stimulating with videos blaring and a crop of popping, singing toys. Jenna’s simple but spacious lobby has lots of room to run around (and not run into anything) and a big kitchen play area that is soothing rather than jumpy.

She’s glad that the recommended age to start at the dentist is now when the first tooth erupts and not the magic age of three. As a parent of two young ones herself she laughs a bit when she tells me that they used to explain in dental school that a three year old was thought to be more cooperative than a baby. Like the rest of us she knows that what we get our kids used to at an early age (i.e. before they can talk and talk about it with us) goes a lot smoother over time. Those first visits are quick and cost less that the visits for children who have their full set of baby teeth.

If you have insurance that covers dentistry Dr Jenna Milot is probably a provider – just call and ask. Both Amanda at Sprout and Paula at Belmont Family Dentistry can walk you quickly through costs if you are paying out of pocket. I know I am grateful at how carefully these dentists describe procedures, their benefits and their costs, so I can be a part of deciding what’s medically necessary and affordable for me and my kids.

We’re all pretty aware of the high cost of medical school but it’s an amazing investment too to create a great modern dental office. What Dr. Jenna and Dr Aaron Tinkle have done represents a real commitment to stick around and build long, lasting relationship with our families.

There are times when we really need that relationship and need it to go well beyond a teeth cleaning or the standard set of braces. When I first met Dr. Rebecca Kuperstein at Parkside Orthodontics she told me all about the things she does at low and no cost to help families of thumb suckers walk through letting the habit go before starting othrodontic treatment (or to be able to avoid it all together).

One of our swap shop members mentioned that her son has a habit he can’t seem to break of pushing his nail up against his gums in a way that is causing gum recession. She and he have tried everything and their dentist is out of options. Her son came up with his own idea that what he really needs a “cap’ on the spot between his teeth that he keeps habitually poking the gums.

It was a real pleasure to say, with confidence, that Dr Kuperstein would understand, take the time to listen and probably find a cleaver way to make that “cap” he’s envisioning.

I really appreciate the way she involves both parents and kids in care decisions. My daughter Emily got to pick for herself between one of two ways to correct her bite alignment and I think very much because she made that decision herself she trots off to every appointment feeling in control and not giving all the adults in her life a whole bunch of grief.

I have a whole bunch of gratitude for all our Roost sponsors, not just for the funding they contribute to our community but also for the wealth of resources they bring to my life as I’ve taken the time to peek behind the scenes. We are definitely richer for knowing each other better.

We haven’t put summer completely behind us and yet I just received an email confirmation of my children’s airline tickets to go see their grandparents for Thanksgiving!

Claire and Emily’s grandma can’t be the only one planning ahead this year to save money. Advance holiday reservations have been busy this year for our Roost Sponsor, Historic Hawthorne Rentals, for their 8 vacation rental homes ranging in size from quaint studios to large SE homes right here in the Sunnyside neighborhood… some places are getting reserved up to 9 months in advance.

If you have relatives coming into town any time this year and you don’t want them piled on top of you in your house or all the way across the river in a chain hotel, you’ll be happy to know that friendly, helpful Clare is still setting up rentals for Thanksgiving weekend starting Nov 25th. For Christmas weekend starting Dec 23rd she has half of the rental properties already reserved. For you really long term planners, spring break is wide open but 4th of July is 100% occupied.

If you do set up an Historic Hawthorne Rental for your out of town guests, they’ll get a great slice of the inner SE Portlandexperience in homes using reclaimed timber repurposed to build all sorts of things including staircases and, in one of the properties, a door into the floor. It operates on a weighted pulley system that is both functional and fun….

Here’s the part I like best –these are vacation homes not hotel rooms. Depending on the size of the property, each has a large or small kids’ play area complete with toys and books along with a TV to watch DVD’s and free high speed internet. If you tell Clare the special needs and ages of your relatives as you make the reservation, she can shuffle around toys and equipment from various properties to better accommodate them. Our co-op members Shelley Carmichael and Chris Landis who own Historic Hawthorne Rentals are parents of a preschooler so they know what it’s like to travel with little ones. They happily provide a Pac-n-Play, crib and high chair for the smallest guests. Every house has a fully equipped kitchen complete with dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, and washer and dryer (those things you usually miss out on when traveling.)

Taylor House easily sleeps 8 and rents for $200-255 nightly with a 3 night minimum stay. Weekly rate is $1300-1640. There is a $150 cleaning fee and a refundable security deposit of $250. There are no other taxes, costs or expenses.

If you really have a lot of people to house over the holidays or for a family reunion or wedding, The Taylor House shares a lot with the Garden Studio and is only 1 block away from their Hawthorne Studio, Landis House, & Hemingway Flat. It is only 5 blocks from their condo rental and 7 blocks from the Morrison Studio and Duplex.

If you are just looking for a staycation (or can talk grandma into staying at your house when she comes leaving the kids in their own familiar beds while you enjoy a romantic get away), their Garden Cottage Studio is an intimate retreat and has a covered private patio nested in a grove of bamboo with lights and candles. It will sleep four if need be and is half the cost of the larger properties: $100-120 nightly; $600-750 weekly with a refundable $250 security deposit and a $75 cleaning fee. There are no additional taxes; they are included in the rates.

The Swap Shop is like a second home for all of us, especially on rainy days, and the Roost on Friday nights is like going out to a friendly restaurant with half the hassle and half the cost of trying to take kids with us out on the town.

Shelley and Chris and Claire have done an amazing job of creating another kind of home away from home for everyone visiting inner SE Portland.

I’m a big fan of anyone who sees a community need and goes about filling it in a way that’s good for them, good for their customers and good for the community. Small, neighborhood businesses don’t come with large advertising budgets. One of the best ways we can thank Chris and Shelley for sponsoring teens at The Roost is to spread the word about their sweet set of vacation rentals right in our neighborhood.

Clare is great to talk to on the phone 360-910-4783 and easiest to reach by email Clare©HistoricHawthorneRentals•com. You can check out pictures and descriptions of all their properties at www.historichawthornerentals.com. Historic Hawthorne Rentals and all of our Roost sponsors are listed on our Sponsors page. We have our own version of Yelp going on too. All you have to do is click on a sponsor on our web page and type in the comments section. A little of your time can do a lot to help our local businesses thrive.

Wren's Nest Preschool - Montessori preschool right in the neighborhood. There's something magical about trays full of natural materials presented with awe and wonder to tiny bodies and little busy minds... [...]

For some of us, reading about picking preschools is a walk down memory lane and for others it’s a process we are just starting into or haven’t given much thought to yet.

I don’t know if this comes as good news or bad news, but as the parent of an almost 9 year old and, shocking for me, an already 12 year old, I can comfortably say the process that starts with picking your first caregiver, day care or preschool continues on a similar theme for many years. The mental list of what’s best for your child, your family and your bank account gets revisited time and time again with every program, summer camp and public or private school decision.

Michelle LaFollette, director and owner of Wren’s Nest Preschool, a Montessori in-home preschool for 20month olds to 5 year olds just a few blocks away from the Swap Shop on Yamhill, has an almost kindergartener and a middle schooler of her own. If Michelle and I could somehow transfer all our observations and knowledge from a decade of placing our own kids in schools and from touring parents through the programs we’ve created, what an email post this would be!

Or would it? Walking that path from holding our babes in our arms to attending graduation ceremonies raises up adults as much as the journey helps our children grow. We learn as much about ourselves as we do about our kids picking places to give our support and energy to over the years.

Other than saying – go with your gut instincts – I wouldn’t for one minute want to get in the middle of telling you what schools or programs are best or try to suggest the best way to evaluate the next caregiver for your child. I can tell you that every Montessori teacher that I have ever known has a calmness and a lively spirit about them that allows for inspirational learning day after day.

Also, there is something developmentally magical about those trays full of natural materials presented with awe and wonder to tiny bodies and little busy minds inspiring even the youngest toddler to give up their crash and thrash tendencies while they take out a little rug to sit on and patiently sort buttons.

Michelle and I both come from Silicon Valley and can laugh while sharing a cup of coffee in her livingroom turned classroom about 2 hour commutes (each way) and high strung parents with big agendas for their offspring. In part as a retreat from that lifestyle but also in response to the way SE Portland lives are shaped, Michelle has set up Wren’s Nest Preschool with a couple of unique features not usually found in a preschool or a daycare. Preschools tend to take the summers off. Wren’s Nest is a haven for children all year round. Day cares are open from the early hours until just before dinner time. Wren’s Nest families arrive between 8:30 and 9 and every child is back with their family by 4pm.

The very best part news for parents of toddlers reading this post: most preschools require children to be potty trained and at least three years old. Michelle’s youngest learners are not yet two and potty training is not a requirement to attend.

Before you pick up the phone to see what days she has available for your not-yet or just-barely two-year-old, I can tell you what you might already imagine, spots for toddlers are popular and go quickly. She already has a full toddler program for the summer and fall. Rather than keep a waiting list she just asks that you check in with her now and again for openings.

If you have been wondering what your three year old is ready for, Michelle opened Wren’s Nest almost three years ago and her first set of toddlers are now moving on to kindergarten leaving 9 open spaces for new 3 to 5 year olds. Jed Arkley’s daughter is one of those first students to go all three years at Wren’s Nest. I got a chance to ask him . . . why Montessori and why Wren’s Nest?

He looked at a lot of different schools and found Michelle’s program more affordable than some of the other Montessori schools he looked at. He loved the intimate setting with less than 10 kids together in the toddler or 3-4 classrooms and he loves the community building that happens along with academics matching each child’s true interests and readiness.

If you haven’t already gone through the sticker shock: preschool, day care or a nanny can sometimes feel like a second mortgage. I understand full time care hovers between $1,200 and $1,500 a month.

More like a college student’s rent than a mortgage: two mornings a week at Wren’s Nest for a toddler: $475. Full day, five days a week for a 3 ½ year old to 5 year old: $740.

While we can put a price on days of the week, we can’t put a price on the best parts of preschool . . . a break for parents, friends for our kids, and, in the case of Wren’s Nest, moments picking berries and tasting herbs in the back yard and a great Montessori classroom experience.

Just like at The Roost, the need for a place to be (for toddlers or teenagers) isn’t just about the parent’s work schedule but about some of the important work of childhood that gets done a bit away from home, in a place where parents aren’t near by, but caring adults are right there with subtle guidance and a calming way.

Wren’s Nest is a very low key place without a sign out front or even a web site. You can drive or walk by and see the front yard play area and families coming and going at 3815 SE Yamhill Street (last block of Yamhill before the Belmont Library). You can call or email Michelle at (503) 235-0093 or vassarlearningcenter©yahoo•com .

There’s family dentistry and then there’s the dentistry family. Dr. Aaron Tinkle belongs to both. His practice, Belmont Family Dentistry, half way up Mt Tabor on Belmont almost at 60th is not the first dental office in his family and won’t be the last. His grandfather, Aunt and Uncle were all dentists and his wife is on her way to starting her own practice soon.

Dentistry runs in the family, definitely. But Dr. Tinkle didn’t race to become a dentist. He had his heart set on being a surgeon. That is until all the surgeons told him to become a dentist. Better family life they said and, though his six month old son is too little to know the difference, they are probably right.

So, after Dr. Tinkle and I congratulated ourselves on organizing our lives in ways that are great for ourselves and our kids, we got down to the business of discussing how to translate what he knows into an email that can help all of us organize our dental care in a way that works well (and doesn’t cost a fortune).

While the health care debate swirls around Washington, dental care is one of the few parts of our health care that we really can manage quite well without insurance in many cases. Dr. Tinkle, like many dentists, has a mix of families with and without insurance. He was quick to point out that the self employed, with some good dental hygiene practices, do really well just paying for dental care.

So about those good dental hygeine practices. I promise I won’t go over the things we all already know. But, I must confess, I was really happy to find out I’m not alone in knowing that flossing is good for me but still not actually doing it. Dr. Tinkle has seen reports that put the national average for flossing at about 10%, as low as 5% if you take out all the people in the dental/health professions who are just trying really hard to set a good example for the rest of us.

OK, I’m feeling better already. But, then, Dr. Tinkle really made my day. I’m sure our Roost sponsor Iva over at JaCivas Bakery and Chocolatier will be happy to hear this one too. . . it doesn’t really exactly matter how much sugar I eat, it only really matters when. If you are looking for a dentist that will take good care of you but will let you eat what ever you want, Dr. Tinkle just might be your man. Sugar during meals: no big deal and actually no different that a piece of french bread. Sugar coating your mouth (or your kid’s mouths) all day long: a really big deal.

His big word of advice parents of really little ones, just water in those traveling sippy cups. Sippy cups (or bottles) of juice are really best avoided at any time but a sit down meal. For the rest of us it’s a matter of not having something sugary that we suck on or sip at all day long.

Dr. Tinkle and I will be working on some great ways he, his wife and son can come be a part of our co-op and even offer some tooth brushing demonstrations (remember those revealing red stain exercises when you were a kid in school?)

In the mean time, he’s discovered that the best way to save all of us money and time is to offer joint visits for parent and child. Especially if you are paying your own way without insurance, this can cut down on everybody’s costs while putting our youngest kids more at ease. First time adult visits are still best done on your own to allow time for xrays that kids don’t usually have the patience for but once you are all set up for ongoing care, it’s great to have just one visit for everyone to share.

If you are looking for a dentist your kids can relate too, who can treat your whole family well too, give Paula, Dr. Tinkle’s receptionist, a call. Be sure to let Paula and Dr. Tinkle know that his Roost sponsorship is supporting a great co-op too.

One of the things I enjoy most about preparing these “know your neighborhood business” emails each week is gathering and then sharing the wealth of knowledge that each of our Roost business sponsors has gained over the years that can benefit us all.

Administrator Don Snow and owner Chuck Lawrence of Lawrence Convalescent Center at 48th and Belmont have a great deal to share with us that can make a big difference in the quality of life for our families. Since most of us will be involved in just a handful of end of life care decisions for our parents, our partner’s parents and at some point our own care as well, it’s comforting to lean on the wisdom of two men who have dedicated a big part of their adult lives to helping families juggle the financial, physical and emotional challenges that aging brings.

A lot has changed over the years in end-of-life care. Hospice care is a relatively new concept and the more general nursing homes or rest homes that we may have visited to sing songs or deliver Valentines in our youth have been divided up in to more specific categories – skilled care, intermediate care, assisted living, residential care and adult foster care homes – each with their own types of care and associated costs. With all the options and some associated restrictions on what insurance policies and the state will and won’t cover, we aren’t just making one care placement decision but a whole series of them as strokes, dementia and other factors affect our parents.

Full convalescent care carries around a $70,000 a year price tag that drains family finances very quickly as Don well knows since Lawrence Convalescent Center accepts both private pay and Medicaid for residents. His biggest piece of advice financially to all of us is this: Don’t wait until a loved one is already in need of care to attempt to move assets between family members in preparation for applying for Medicaid. The state works very hard to find all available assets and will scrutinize finances in the years and months right before benefit applications very carefully.

As much as we’d all rather talk about the weather or our kids or anything else but delicate financial matters around the holiday table, I know I’ll be asking a for a few more details when I visit my parents in San Diego this Christmas and feel a lot better for it.

As some of us already know, there is big role reversal that happens in the parent child relationship in the later years. Suddenly the woman who used to ride you to eat your vegetables needs gentle and not so gentle prodding to eat well and keep on top of medications. You can find yourself very quickly in the position of trying to help figure what’s best, what’s needed and what’s missing in your parents lives and being a part of orchestrating their living situation in ways you never imagined.

Lawrence Convalescent Center is a small, family run intermediate care facility with 41 beds, locally owned, not part of a big corporation. Don, in his 15 years working in assisted care, 10 as an administrator, has worked both in places that are quite large and bustling with activity and places like Lawrence Convalescent Center that are small, quiet and serene.

While the average stay in a care facility is in the 2-3 year range, Chuck, Don and his staff can talk fondly about residents that lived in one care facility for 5,10, 15 and even 20 years. Don told me some really great, inspiring and sometimes surprising stories about what makes a great placement for adults in their later years.

One woman was quite upset when, at almost 105 and ten years into assisted care, her private pay funds were exhausted and she had had to move into a larger place that would take Medicaid. It didn’t take long for her and her family to discover that she had been a bit lonely at her quiet little private pay center. She found herself quite enlivened and invigorated by all activity at her new space.

Some of the larger, newer care facilities in our own neighborhood are more attractive to families initially as they look for the very best place for grandma or grandpa to be. Lawrence Convalescent Center, built in 1970 can, at first glance, seem by some to be too small and simple. Don knows that families that take the time to come in and speak with the staff often really like what they find. While large and busy is great for some residents, especially for dementia residents, small and quiet is exactly what’s needed. Don is glad that, as an administrator, he doesn’t have to push staff to stick to business only so they can get through every patient on a busy floor. Taking the time to talk with residents and listening to their stories in a small facility is often, for the staff, the very best part of the job.

They kept it simple but certainly not small as they served Thanksgiving dinner last Thursday afternoon to their residents and a large, joyful gathering of extended family members who live nearby and have been grateful to have the expertise of Lawrence Convalescent Center to lean on in the passing years.

Not just as a Roost business sponsor, but in many other ways as well, Chuck Lawrence is the antithesis of the corporate executive just looking at the bottom line. He’s a regular participant in the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association leading the crime prevention meetings and he has dedicated two Saturdays a month for years to graffiti removal in the neighborhood.

It only takes a minute to stop by the convalescent center for a visit. Gardening volunteers and people who want to volunteer with residents are always welcomed. While you are there, Chuck and his daughter Lisa, Don and his staff can give you great advice on services and resources that make some of the most challenging care decisions a lot more bearable.

Much thanks to you, Chuck and Don, for supporting The Roost for our neighborhood youth and for everything else you do to support community. Who knows, by putting a little money into The Roost, Chuck may very well be saving himself some money and time on his graffiti rounds as well. Time will tell.

If you already know Iva and Jack Elmer and some of their extended family, then I’m not telling you anything new when I say there’s a whole lot of love and talent that goes into every cookie, cake and fancy chocolate confection. Jack’s Swiss background and years of training bring a noticeable European flair to everything JaCivas does.

If you’ve seen or tasted their treats in Zupans and Fred Meyers and several other places around town but you have yet to go into their bakery and candy shop on 4733 SE Hawthorne – treat your kids and the kid in you real soon to their warm welcome and a few great surprises.

When I sat down with Iva the other day, after she had just put the finishing touches on a captivating holiday window display, I immediately started searching for the things that even those of us that already know her well would be delighted to find out. Sure enough I found a few gems:

2000 amazing pumpkin pies (along with apple and berry pies too) will come out of their ovens in time for Thanksgiving. Her two secret ingredients: aged pumpkin pie filling and fresh local spices. 2000 pies may seem like a lot but you need to call ahead and reserve one or they will all be gone before you get there.

They already have a big following for their butter flake rolls (no extra butter or baking needed) and recently got the permission to sell to the public the Burlie Swiss dinner rolls that they had been making exclusively for a local high-end restaurant. These are the kind that you finish baking in your own oven on Thanksgiving (or any other day you want to fill your house with that great just baked smell). They take phone orders for the rolls and pies and their famous torts for all the major holidays so you are sure yours will be waiting for you when come in.

What always surprises me when I go into JaCiva’s (and, happily, I’ve gotten to go a lot lately to set up their sponsorship) is the lengths they will go to to create chocolate confections that you can’t get anywhere else. I think I could go in every week for the year and discover something new. But even a chocoholic like me may not have caught on to the most novel thing they do: Chocolate piñatas.

Picture a chocolate turkey (or snow man) large enough to be the centerpiece of your holiday table that, when broken open, is a cornucopia of “seasonally appropriate” treasures.

Willy Wonka would be jealous of the list of turkey piñata stuffers that Iva described to me: Truffles, caramels, apple pie and pumpkin pie flavored jelly bellies, chocolate wish bones and even candy versions of peas and carrots. At $65 the whole thing costs more than the roasted turkey itself but I’m sure it will be remembered much longer. If extravagant chocolate centerpieces are not what you had in mind, their 15 different sizes of chocolate Santas will speak to any budget (and taste a whole lot better than the dime store versions that have been shipped across the planet in a cargo box.)

And now, two of the best kept secrets in this part of town . . .

#1 JaCiva’s After Dark Dessert House: JaCivas isn’t just a bakery and candy shop. On Friday and Saturday nights 5-10 p.m. they are also one of the most romantic places to go on a little mini date (when you’ve finally gotten a night off from parenting) for their After Dark Dessert House. Kids are welcome too (and loved up well by the staff) but the decadent desserts and extra dark hot cocoa, served in a room that could transport you back to a little corner of Europe if you allow it too, are really meant for us.

#2 New spot for holiday parties: JaCiva’s up until as recently as last week had the After Dark Dessert House also open on Thursdays and have just decided to open on Thursdays only for reserved parties of 10 or more. What this means for us is that we can have first dibs at reserving the space for any company parties, birthday parties or holiday parties for no more than the cost of ordering the great desserts and drinks. Parties need to start by 5 or 6 so their staff doesn’t have to close up and then open up again. If you are interested, let Iva or her wonderful daughters and granddaughters who run the shop know which Thursday you have in mind.

It’s a good thing each of our sponsors get featured every quarter because there is so much more that can be said (and so many more things for me to sample to, you know, educate myself on your behalf.)

If you call JaCivas for pies, rolls or cakes, stroll in for the After Dark Dessert House on a Friday or Saturday night, bring the kids for an afternoon treat or sneak in without them to indulge your own sweet tooth, be sure to say hi to Iva and Jack and thank them for supporting the Roost.

JaCiva’s Bakery and Chocolatier

Just when you think you know someone really well, you find out something new. Our featured Roost sponsor this week is my own partner Scott Buntin of ASAP Mac and PC Services who has been keeping our web site and Swap Shop computers and printers humming for the last two years. I’ve picked up bits of computer knowledge just listening to him talk with his clients but I got a much fuller picture sitting down to write this posting to help all of us with our computer needs.

The first thing I wanted to know was how he spends most of his time. What is the number one thing individual people and small businesses contact him to do?

VIRUSES: Virus clean-up on PCs tops the list. For PCs he’s been doing a lot of ad ware removal of those pesky pop up ads, especially the ones that insist you have lots of viruses and offer you a $49.99 dollar “solution.” Apple computers don’t share the same vulnerabilities to viruses as machines running Windows. For Macs, he’s been educating users in how to avoid the pop-up internet ads that aren’t actually damaging to Macs, but are still quite annoying.

UPGRADES: The second most common reason people contact a “computer guy” is for upgrading existing equipment. We all like to avoid dumping old equipment and purchasing new both for our pocketbook and for the environment. Not all of us have the time, patience or knowledge to weed through our various upgrade options.

WIRELESS These days, many folks are installing wireless in their homes – no longer is the computer tethered to the modem. Kick back on the couch and surf the internet. Scott can help you setup wireless so it’s convenient and easy to use, but still secure.

Scott is a great resource for figuring out what combination of adding memory or a larger hard drive and/or newer software will get your computer sped up and caught up to modern times – or at least fit for the kids – with some helpful advice on what to get next. Best of all, once you pick from all your options, he does the install of both hardware and software and you are on your way.

In the case of computers that are old enough that upgrading would really not be cost effective or realistic, he’ll tell you that too. If that’s the case, he’ll discuss options for replacement of the computer, along with transferring all of your old stuff to the new one, and disposing of the old one, including erasing the drive before it goes to recycling or donation.

DATA RECOVERY: When you absolutely have to have it back after it crashes . . . it’s nice to know you’ve done everything possible to find the data you can recover. Scott can also get you on a good back up system – hopefully before you ever have a problem.

HOW TO: We all learn differently. Scott’s 5 years on the help desk at Apple working with all levels of computer users from individuals calling in for help to service technicians out in the field and fellow apple employees too, has given him lots of experience walking people through various computer and internet access issues, navigating new (and old but underutilized) software and, basically, doing what it takes to create ease of use so you get the most out of your machine.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST: The one thing that holds us all back from seeking any service whether it’s repairs for our cars, that first orthodontics visit or asking someone to come look at our computer is not knowing what the bill will be. Scott charges $80 an hour with a one hour minimum and caps out at 2 ½ hours in fees even if the job takes a bit longer so you know you won’t generally be paying more than $200 for his time.

Gift Certificates are also available and are at a discount through December. He also has prepaid service packages available, so computer support can be budgeted in advance (at a discount to normal pricing), avoiding unexpected hits to the pocketbook.

FREE HELP AND ADVICE: Some issues just aren’t big enough to warrant the cost of a service call and for that, you can be glad that TaborSpace opened up in our neighborhood this year. Scott holds community office hours every Wednesday and Saturdays 9-12am inside this cool little gathering place and coffee hot spot inside Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church – at the corner of SE 55th and Belmont. If you haven’t already gotten inside this space, it’s definitely worth checking out on a wet weekend morning or during the week. Open Monday – Friday: 7am to 4pm, Saturday: 9am to 4 and Sunday: 12:30 – pm with a full service coffee bar, savory and sweet pastries and a little play space for the kids. Many of the baristas are volunteers and, on Wed and Sat mornings, so is Scott. Any donations you give him for his time helping you with an upgrade question, software navigation, etc gets split 50-50 with the TaborSpace folks – a great way to support community.

COMPUTERS AND OTHER ELECTRONICS FOR THE ROOST: Working and non-working electronics are great things for curious minds in The Roost, our middle school after school program staffed by Camp Fire and run on lots of creativity.

Scott has been wiping clean older lap top computers to become homework stations for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. If you are not sure if your old lap top computer is worth keeping around for your needs, call Scott or bring it to TaborSpace during Scott’s office hours to find out. If you don’t keep it, Roost kids will have a great new homework tool.

Scott also sometimes has a short-list of those who just can’t afford a computer new enough to be useful, and is usually on the look-out for machines that can be repurposed for these folks.

Ideal machines for The Roost or the short-list are desktops or laptops, Mac or Windows, up to 4 or 5 years old.

We are grateful to have Dr. Rebecca Kuperstein, the only orthodontist in inner southeast, right in our same Swap Shop neighborhood just a block off of Laurelhurst Park at 539 SE 39th. Since there are some bite alignment issues that can but don't always get noticed by a general dentist, first visits are best made by 7 or 8 years old. An early consult can let you know what to expect down the road and maybe even save you the cost and your child the discomfort of bigger corrective measures later on. Dr. Kuperstien is our very first Roost sponsor. She'll be glad to know that you heard about her practice from the Sunnyside Swap Shop Co-op.

Healthy, sustainable communities are full of great locally run businesses and it’s been my pleasure, as we’ve launched The Roost program this fall, to interview our new local business sponsors to see what information they can share that is helpful to us all.

Hopefully, this email will save you from having to spend that first hour in the orthodontist office. I think I just spent it for you, asking all the questions any parent might ask. Here are the answers I got from Dr. Rebecca Kuperstein who has been treating children and adults as the only inner southeast orthodontist at her offices just a block off of Laurelhurst Park 539 SE 39th.

What is the ideal age to make a first visit to the dentist and the orthodontist? First visits to the dentist can be made between 1 and 3 years old. A good guideline is 6 months after the first teeth start coming in. These visits are usually done just sitting in a parent’s lap, getting used to the dentist office.
First visits to an orthodontist are best made at 7 or 8 years old. There are some bite alignment issues that can but don’t always get noticed by a general dentist that should be treated at this time.

It’s not quite like saving for college but what should we all expect to spend on a child’s orthodontic treatment? Most orthodontists don’t charge for the first consultative visit so there is no savings in waiting. An early consult can let you know what to expect down the road.

I’ve been taking Claire and Emily (my 8 and 11 year old) for regular 6 month visits to Rebecca free of charge until either of them start to need treatment.

The low for treatment is $1,500 and more complex treatment can run as high as $6,000. Insurance policies typically cover 50% of a set amount that is usually around $1,000 to $2,000 so it can be a surprise cost for families with insurance that discover they need larger treatments than insurance will cover. With some planning, there are ways to get annual tax savings on the costs.

I’ll be sharing information from Parkside Orthodontics once a quarter in our emails, including information on adult orthodontics too. If there is information you would like me to include, please let me know. You can reach Rebecca directily at: www.parksideortho.com

Supporting each other and supporting local businesses helps keep our community strong. Thank you Rebecca for supporting The Roost so all the neighborhood teenagers who want and need a place to be can be welcomed at The Roost.
