Roost for the Day

Get to know The Roost from the inside out.

Filling out just the Camp Fire supervision paperwork allows students to be at The Roost for a day to see what it’s all about before registering any afternoon that Portland Public Schools are in session.

Please call ahead to The Roost phone (503) 229-4345 or email roost©portlandcampfire•org  (roost©portlandcampfire•org)   in advance to let the Camp Fire staff know your student is coming.  Students can arrive any time after 3pm (the earlier the better jump into everything that is happening) and need to be picked up by 6pm or given your permission to leave on their own.

Special days days are scheduled in the spring for 5th graders to Roost for the Day.  If your student is entering middle school in the fall, available Roost dates are:
Wednesday, February 29 – Anime Club
Thursday, March 8 – Gym day with a special feature of donated fixie bikes to ride
Tuesday, March 20 – Art day (late start the next day in Portland Public Schools)
Wednesday, April 4 – Anime Club
Thursday, April 12 – Gym day (no school the next day in Portland Public Schools)
Tuesday, April 17 –  Art day (late start the next day in Portland Public Schools)
Wednesday, May 2nd – Anime Club
Tuesday, May 15 - Art day (late start the next day in Portland Public Schools)
Thursday, May 31 – Gym day
Wednesday, June 6 – Anime Club (last full week of school)
Parents of 6th-8th graders have the option of allowing students to arrive and leave on their own but we ask all parents of visiting 5th graders to drop off and pick up students.  One parent can bring or pick up several 5th graders as long as all 5th graders not accompanied by their own parent have a completed permission form.

A typical day at The Roost . . .
The Roost belongs to me from the minute I walk inside just after 3 in the afternoon until it closes up around 6.

My only obligation when I first get here right after school is to order up some food at the snack bar from the menu I helped set up and then  . . .crash with my friends . . .  just to talk . . . or start in on a piece of art.

Community artists and entrepreneurs are in and out of The Roost sharing these skills I get to experience and maybe even use to start my own business some day, like tomorrow, if I feel up to it.

There’s always something going on in the rest of the building and I’m getting lots of work experience and community service hours teaching arts and crafts to younger kids, being an aid in a circus arts class, working in this big kitchen downstairs and helping people in need.

When I need a place to do homework and some inspiration to get through it, The Roost has resources and great staff to help keep me going.

I think I’ll finish up today working on that jean jacket I’ve been remaking so it’s just for me or see who’s up for some foos ball.

Tomorrow?  We’ll it all depends . . . on me.
