Friday April 9 - Haiti benefit dinner

Last Friday it felt like half of SE Portland (and most of our local Brazilian population) was in and out of the Roost and gym helping co-op member Leticia George raise hundreds of dollars for her marathon run for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Let’s show up in force again to support our oldest co-op kids: Our Roost youth (6th,7th and 8th graders) and their fabulous Camp Fire staff have been busy this past month preparing a benefit dinner for Haiti tonight, Friday, April 9th. We are fortunate to have Jason Dryden, Dad of Rooster Lexie, helping prepare the dinner. You may know him from the delicious tamales and greek cuisine he has prepared for Friday dinners in the past.

There will be lots of authentic Haitian food (and some recognizable favorites for our kids) served 5:30-7 with the gym open 3-5 and 6-9.

  • Haitian Plate: Rice and Beans, potato salad and green salad $5
  • Just Haitian Rice and Beans: $3
  • Haitian Potato Salad a la cart: $2
  • Side green Salad: $2
  • Cheese Nachos: $3
  • Haitian Cinnamon Cake: $2
  • Pink Lemonade: $1

Here’s a behind the scenes peek from, Renee, our main Roost staff member at everything that went into getting ready for Haitian night:

During our preparation we have had guest speaker, Karen Weitz, come to The Roost and share with us stories of her time in Haiti, beautiful pictures of Haiti before the earthquake, and even brought in Haitian art and money! The students were very engaged and got to ask Karen questions such as, “What is a seventh grader in Haiti’s favorite snack food?” To which Karen replied, “Nutella and bread.” This got a lot of the Rooster excited being that this is also one of their favorite snack foods they get to enjoy at The Roost. Karen taught us all how to say “Hello” in Haitian, which you will have to come to the dinner to hear! This Friday we will be choosing roles as servers, greeters, decorators, and techies. Hope to see you there!

On Saturday, you can bring your own favorite food to the Swap Shop couches and gather round with Audrey VanBuskirk’s family to enjoy the Ukelele tunes of Chris Lydgate. It’s a folksy gathering from 6-7. Enjoy the show!
