Sunnyside Environmental School
COMMUNITY PARTNERS
The Sunnyside Swap Shop Co-op has benefited greatly from the support of several outstanding organizations that we also support with our events and services. Check out the web sites of these organizations and see a description of our activities together below:
Sunnyside Environmental School: The site for the Sunnyside Swap Shop Co-op was specifically selected to be close to this K-8th grade Portland Public School that focuses on the environment using a holistic, integrated curriculum. Several of our events are integrated into the school’s curriculum to help support the students’ and families’ efforts towards the reduce, reuse and recycle model of resource stewardship.
The school hosts the Swap Shop’s Back-to-School Exchange in the fall, and the weekend-long Useful Goods Exchange in the spring. SES middle school students form the core leadership team for both events.
The Swap Shop assists with the management of the school’s lost and found, integrating unclaimed clothing the second Thursday of each month into the Clothes With Heart Clothing Circuit. Co-op members volunteer time to recirculate the excess clothing of several organizations so that each group benefits from clothing that is most useful to them.
K-2nd grade students take several field trips each year to the Swap Shop swapping books and toys while learning about the environmental impact of the manufacturing, packaging and shipping of new toys to market.
