Too late to run to the hardware store tonight, but if something started dripping, seeping or leaking around your house during this last bout of snow and rain, you may be happy to know what I found out from Lois Hankins (long time owner of Hankins True Value Hardware store on Hawthorne and MLK) this week. . .

Yes, it is a lot easier to stop a leak before it starts but once it starts, it’s good to know I won’t always have to wait until everything dries out to address the new, fantastically inconvenient problem that greets me when I come home from a long day or wake up to when I have plenty of other plans for my morning.

Believe it or not, there is a sealing paint to apply while those walls are actively seeping moisture and a hydraulic cement that you can push right into an active, even gushing, wet spot.

I’m not really sure who thought building so many houses with basements was such a good idea in this climate, but Lois also has all sorts of solutions for bringing rain gutter water much farther from your house before it starts seeking a way underground (and the patience to walk around with you picking out the things that will work best for what you need to do).

I don’t know how your place is faring but this is the rain storm that helped Scott and I discover that the “drain” at the bottom of our cement steps leading down to our outside basement door isn’t really a drain connected to the sewer system. Most likely it’s a very short pipe leading to a drain field that has gotten plenty overwhelmed and it’s only January. It’s not just refusing to drain but has become a really effective conduit for water to come back up and seek a level field in among the stuff stacked in our basement.

Sigh.

If you, like us, are seeking a wet/dry shop vac, call Lois and her staff before you come over. True Value put the $120 model on special for less than $50. She has sold them all and is back ordered until later this week but what she gets in soon will still be a great bargain if you can wait.

The real bargain is people that answer the phone and give great advice, a quick stop close by for most of the things we might need and an order and pick up (with no shipping cost) for the big stuff.

Thank you, Lois, for being a Roost sponsor (she has a soft spot for our teens having helped two grand kids through Sunnyside Environmental School) and a big thank you to all our swap shop members for giving support to great local businesses.

Lots of great, local, community businesses on our web site www.sunnysideswapshop.org and our favorite hardware store at:

If you have been following at all the efforts of Sunnyside neighbors to influence the drive through plans for Walgreens at Belmont and Cesar Chavez or the efforts to save Naomi’s Organic Farm Supply in Sellwood on land owned by Les Schwab Tires, you can follow along in this post and find some hope.

Not because I can promise that your views on a drive through pharmacy will be heard and make a difference or because there is some way to guarantee that Naomi’s will stay in business on land large enough for both a popular local farm supply store and a Portland based tire store to co-exist, but because there appears to be at least one place in inner Southeast where corporate strength is put to good use without sacrificing our own local ability to call the shots and shape the services we provide to each other.

I often forget that Hankins True Value Hardware Store in the 1700 block of Hawthorne has a corporate backer. Maybe it’s the front door that seems like the front door to your grandfather’s woodworking shop. Maybe it’s the low key way Lois and her sons and grandsons and a few family friends (without uniforms or plastic name tags) all work there together and greet you without being “the greeter” when you walk in.

But here’s the real difference, it seems: Lois Hankins has two independently owned hardware stores that are essentially part of a buyer’s co-op – allowing the corporate volume to keep prices down while allowing her to really listen to us (instead of a corporate shelving standards directive) when she decides what to purchase and where to display it.

Top sellers right now (that you might not even think a hardware store would sell): canning supplies. Top reasons to buy irrigation piping in the inner SE: to make hula hoops, of course. She long ago stopped just selling that black bendable piping by the bundle and wisely started selling it by the foot (with a good supply of colored, foil and even “tie-died” tape.)

When the perennials didn’t sell so well one year, they got planted out front. Makes for a much more beautiful walk through their front yard instead of a box store’s big parking lot.

If you order something on line with True Value and have it shipped to one of the Hankin’s two stores instead of your house, you get free shipping and the store gets all the revenue so you are using the power of the internet but keeping your dollars close to home. The revenue of the smaller number of direct shipped items is enough to keep the web site running and this is just one of the reasons the stores can be smaller and still well funded.

Having a good, fair and just corporate structure is a great start but we all know it’s individual people that really make the difference once they are given a fair chance to do so. So in that first year of the recession, how did a store that wants to respond to it’s neighborhood’s needs do? There were only two True Value hardware stores in the Western United States that year with growing sales. Both of them were Lois’s.

Lois’s son Raymond sees their MLK store still going strong since that neighborhood is going through the same kind of renaissance that our part of SE went through over the last ten years.

All around the store on Hawthorne, most of our remodels are done. The new families are in and it’s business as usual for the majority of us in this little part of SE. . . a little maintenance here, a small repair there. Sure, our local little hardware store isn’t going gang busters like it was when this neighborhood first started turning over a new leaf but let’s not forget the people who were willing to special order what we asked for and share their decades of knowledge when we were just starting out.

When Walgreen’s stopped carrying a product I cared a lot about (that I knew was still being made), all the manager felt he could do was tell me about the corporate change in shelving decisions and the incentives they were giving him to not special order for each customer’s requests.

Gave me some incentive to seek out the places where independently owned and community minded still means something really helpful.

Now if only I can get Lois to retire from hardware stores and go into pharmaceuticals!

Until that time, I’ll count on The Herb Shoppe to mix up my medicine and we can all save ourselves from having to zig zag all around town by giving a quick call first to see if Lois has what we need (a small store does mean a smaller inventory – no wood, basic paint, but plenty of the necessities in all categories: electrical, plumbing, hardware for this and that)

This is the story of over wrapped shoes and under wrapped finances . . . the story of estate sales and lawyers, whimsy and wonder.

If through it all you find some valuable resources for your family and an angle on shopping you hadn’t quite thought about in a while. . . then this tale will have worked it’s magic.

This particular peek into the cycle of life starts out with the “shoes of last resort.”

I’m a thrifty gal and my daughters are resourceful acquirers. They dove into the big Sunnyside Swap and Spring Clean Up a few weekends ago eager and willing to try it on and take it home.

But the summer sandals my youngest daughter Claire was hoping for weren’t there. They weren’t in our shoe bins at the Swap Shop. They weren’t at Piccolina on Clinton (our favorite resale shop that recently opened a second store on Woodstock) or the Goodwill.

So we made that trek out into the suburbs to a box store and found a suitable pair just fine but this is the place in the story where I start to whine.

Not about the price or the style or the non-existence salesperson but about the Dr. Seuss style packaging. I could just see the Lorax with his big need to speak for the trees (and a few other natural resources) as we opened the box to find the usual tissue paper and two sandals . . . each incased in their own plastic bag, their toes stuffed with paper and the heels full of styrofoam (to retain a good shape) and, to my bemusement, a stiff piece of cardboard between these super wrapped beauties – you know, just in case they wanted to bump around in the box on that long trip from China and the plastic wasn’t enough to keep them from rubbing up against each other.

The price was decent and, from my experience, the shoe quality quite questionable. If they both make it through the summer without falling apart, I’ll put them in our size 1 kids shoe bin or out with the other shoes at our annual Back-to-School Clothing Exchange . At least the next parent won’t have to witness a whole flotilla of paper and oil based products accompanying their purchase.

I choose to bring up this over-the-top bit of packaging because . . . it’s Mother’s Day next weekend and you might be buying someone a gift or someone might be wondering what’s a great thing to do for you.

While we can’t all take the time to research the original source of our purchases or give our lives over to the ban-the-bag campaign, we can make our purchases in ways that bring us delight and re-infuse our local economy.

If you stroll over to Noun or White Rabbit Vintage on and off Belmont in the high 20′s and low 30′s, the one of a kind items that you could take home for mom (or yourself) are 5 parts beauty, 3 parts kitsch and 2 parts nostalgia. There’s jewelry remade from vintage pieces, refurbished furniture, funky old kitchenware and even sweaters `refurbished’ into wall art.

Stephanie, owner of Noun, gets in her high mileage car once a week and visits the local estate sales so that everything old can be new again. The upcharge from what she pays for grandma’s vintage glassware to what she charges you when you take it home for a mother’s day brunch makes her a modest living instead of helping corporate executives make 250 times the salary of their hired workers.

You don’t have to become a socialist or an anarchist or even a do-it-all-yourself isolationist to step away from some of the insanity. All you have to do is step into Grandma’s Attic in the back of Margaret Kellerman’s White Rabbit Vintage and pick out furniture that came (at least this time around) from inside someone’s Victorian or old Craftsman, not out of a cardboard box with a tiny metal hand crank hex tool.

Sweet gifts for under $20 and great lifetime purchases for under $200 don’t always come with a Swedish meatball lunch. Margaret and Stephanie, each in their own way, have great taste and sweet, comforting stores that are wonderful to shop in.

This first part of our know-your-neighbor weekly post is really just one more reminder that there are plenty of ways to honor mom and our corner of the planet at the same time.

But I promised you lawyers and wonder and we haven’t gotten to that part yet so I best move on, if you don’t mind, from the shopping to the end game.

Mother’s Day isn’t a one way path for any of us as parents. We get to look in both directions as we cross the street from child to parent to the possible caretaker for our own parents.

All the mothers that have passed through this world have tales to tell both of wonder and caution and, once a quarter, I check in on some of those stories with Don Snow, director of Lawrence Convalescent.

Many of the stories Don has to tell from his life long career in assisting the elderly are great reminders that, if an apple a day keeps the doctor a way, then a well timed lawyer visit each decade keeps the crisis at bay.

As an assisted living facility that takes Medicaid, Lawrence Convalescent might seem, at first glance, like the rest home of last resort. Thankfully that isn’t the case. From everything I’ve seen, it’s a place you’d be glad to have your parents at . . . a small facility where everyone is well known and the staff enjoys their jobs.

Don looks forward to working with families that have planned ahead for the golden years and can tell you all sorts of challenging stories about families who have not. If our parents don’t have medical directives or a durable power of attorney in place as their competencies slip then everything from finances to hospice care can get tangled up in complex emotions and greed.

Maybe this is the Mother’s Day that you ask mom more than just how she’s doing but also how well she is set up for ongoing care.

Touchy subjects I know, even in our own lives.

I have been hearing great things from families that are working with our Roost sponsor, Bea Wise-Krull who specializes in family estate planning. From all the times Don’s helped patients work through issues over the years, he also has good connections with several attorneys that specialize in elder law and with protective services. A quick phone call to him and his staff will get you some helpful recommendations.

I’d rather go shopping for a present than shopping for a lawyer or a social worker any day but I sleep better at night when I’ve put some protections in place and let someone more knowledgeable and experienced than me walk me through my options.

So it’s no wonder that when I walked into Lawrence Convalescent yesterday, Don and a few staff members were gathered around a large salt water fish tank. I have some friends who make a hobby out of keeping a salt water environment in their living room. They will talk your ear off about how much easier it is these days with improvements in equipment and technology. The woman taking care of the lobby fish tank at the corner of Belmont and agreed. “Don’t skimp on the set up,” she said (referring to the purchases you make in advance on pumps and what not to get a large fish tank started). “A lot of people try to do that and they just end up struggling because of it.”

I’d like to think we’ve gotten a large fish tank started, a nice little set up, a thriving co-op and a great community that we can all swim around in. If it’s improved your life I am ever so glad. It’s certainly improved mine and I can only hope that the shops and the legal resources in this cycle of life story add something special to the mix for you.

I picked up a book at the Sunnyside Swap and Spring Clean Up called “The Inside Scoop” – all about the rise of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream as one of the inspiring examples of socially responsible business. There’s a whole chapter in the book dedicated to linked prosperity.

You’ve probably guessed by now, I’m a big fan of linked prosperity. Hope you are too.

Some of the best family/cargo bikes with room for kids and gear run $2,650 – $3,500. But you can “extra cycle” the bike you already have for about $600 (literally lengthening the bike you own so that two kids either holding on or strapped in can ride with you). You can buy a bike already lengthened starting at $1,000.

<o> </o>

If you are trading in your car for bike transport, you won’t have to be quite the trail blazer that other families were even just a year or two ago. My hat goes off to our co-op member Destiny Tsunami who has been pedaling her kindergartener and two toddlers around in a Box Cycle from Clever Cycles all year long. If you ask her, there are a few things she would do differently if she could make the investment all over again. Thankfully for you, things like better turning radiuses and lower centers of gravity are already in the newer models.

<o> </o>

Personally, I’m jealous of the whole idea of continuously variable shifting in newer family bikes. We can all handle a little momentary loss of power when shifting on the flat or even uphill when pedaling for one. When two or more roll along and groceries are involved the idea that the little “chunk chunk” moment that happens between two gears will never happen again just sounds glorious.

<o> </o>

All this time, I’ve been thinking that metal scoot bikes have sprouted up all over the place because the wooden ones just aren’t in everyone’s price range. Turns out they also aren’t a perfect fit for rainy <st1><st1>Portland</st1></st1> since they are made with a water soluble glue. Clever Cycles stopped carrying Scuut bikes and now has a higher end wooden bike and a metal bike priced comparably to the Scuut with a nice platform for little riders to put there feet up on.

<o> </o>

Scoot bikes come in all shapes and sizes. Crank has gifted us the larger white metal scoot bike, decorated by our Roost kids, that now lives in the gym storage room with our smaller pink metal bike and several Skuuts (stored safely out of the rain). Chances are there’s now one the right size to try from 2 years old on up. The crew at Crank says we can let all ages on the larger white scoot bike (can’t tell you how happy I am to have one of these type bikes I don’t have to take away from the older kids.)

<o> </o>

Which brings me back to that fit I was first talking about. When Demetri, the original owner of Veloce sold his beautiful shop to Brent Engstrom, he went on to become a high end “fitter” working exclusively with some of the highest performing cyclists (those that race) to help each person have the perfect fit to their bike.

<o> </o>

We are all racing. Racing from here to there, racing to capture our kid’s rapid growth for posterity before they’ve grown up and out and on to the next thing.

<o> </o>

So, before the spring and summer weather really hits and every bike shop is slammed with business, go ahead and meet Chris and Justin at Crank one afternoon, or pay a visit to co-op members Dean and Rachel at Clever Cycles or roll your ride into Veloce and let Brent know I sent you.

<o> </o>

These are some of the most qualified people to take a look at you and take a look at your bike and help you have a better fit. With a few adjustments here and there, you’ll have more power in your ride.

<o> </o>

Bike fittings are a $50 investment at Crank. What a great way to meet your newest neighbor, help a new local business along and possibly make this the spring and summer that you really love your bike.

Fresh off of hosting a carnival held in a gym inside a church filled with trapezes and a swap shop, I am sitting down at my computer figuring out how to best describe some doctors with classes and acupuncture and warm cups of tea in an Herb Shoppe .

Let’s start with the obvious . . . some things are not what they seem. Or, better yet, they are what they seem and then a whole lot more.

To call the Sunnyside Swap Shop Co-op an indoor play place is a fair and accurate statement . . . just not the whole picture of what our community offers. When you walk into The Herb Shoppe at 3327 Hawthorne, you are walking into a place that sells lots of herbs. If you already know the herb that you want and need, it’s a great place to buy all sorts of dried and powdered herbs on their own or combined by the staff into wonderful concoctions like cold care tea.

Just as someone can come to our co-op and not realize that there is an outdoor play yard and an upstairs gym and a restaurant on Friday nights, you can walk, ride or drive right past the Herb Shoppe and not realize that there are medical doctors treating patients past the front space that is their natural medicine pharmacy or that this is also a place to get acupuncture and massage and take free classes.

Co-op member Dr. Jennifer Curtis, along with the Herb Shoppe founder Dr. JJ Pursell, understand that we don’t all have the same knowledge about herbs and naturopathic medicine. They are both parents of young children so they also understand that we don’t have the luxury of several hours a day to implement a treatment plan or to read up on the latest treatment methods for use and our kids.

I have to confess, one of the things I appreciate most about the Herb Shoppe is that they understand that I need a little hand holding when I’m prescribed a tincture or told to steep my own cup of tea full of the medicines that will benefit me. Not just the doctors but all the staff can give me really clear explanations of what and why and how for each herb and procedure so I really understand what I’m doing.

The other thing I appreciate is that I don’t have to give up other forms of medicines to have this resource in my life. My lab work for the treatments I receive through Dr. Pursell or Dr Curtiss are still done on my Kaiser insurance and they have the ability to prescribe herbal medicines or any of the medicines that I can pick up at a standard pharmacy

In these financially challenging times, I’m especially glad that you or I don’t have to make a doctor’s appointment as our first step at the Herb Shoppe to get some valuable advice and education and tangible solutions for our medical issues.

If you walk in and say you read about the Herb Shoppe as a member of the Sunnyside Swap Shop and just want to look around, I can promise that the quick 10 minute walk around the front herbal displays with a staff member who has helped and consulted hundreds of families is worth your time and then some even if you don’t have a particular “cure” you are looking for.

One prescription that Dr. Curtiss and Dr. Pursell have been giving out lately you will probably really appreciate. They have been prescribing the Swap Shop to their patients who are struggling to find balance with small children in the house.

Whether you have small children or children almost as taller or taller than you, you can prescribe yourself some time in the Herb Shoppe to visit the “country docs in the city.”

What ails you may not need a fancy cream or a designer drug. Having a pharmacy staff and great doctors that will look at the whole picture with you and really explore all your options is a resource worth celebrating.

We celebrate a whole collection of local businesses on our web site www.sunnysideswapshop.org listing their contact information and swap shop posts.

To reach the Herb Shoppe:

I am super happy to report that somebody (that somebody being cool and hip Oregonian Daniel Caplan) is working hard to open a new gym just two blocks from our co-op. To my utter delight, Daniel’s workout gym runs pretty much just like our Swap Shop. There’s a code keypad on the front door, pay-as-you-go memberships with no cancellation fees, a space big enough to be useful but not so big as to be impersonal with a special way for you to pitch in for the environment. In the case of the Green Microgym, your workout powers the room.

Hop on the spin bike and the energy bar you had on your way in will be powering the ceiling fan for the next three hours while another member’s morning chai helps keep the lights on. Every revolution on the elliptical churns electricity back to the grid . . . calories instead of fossil fuels converted into Watts.

How much is enough and not too much? That’s a question we all have to ask ourselves whether we’re acquiring toys for our kids or taking on new projects. Daniel, having been a personal trainer for many years, knows that you just don’t need all those fancy machines that look cool but don’t do as much as you would hope. Having an environmental commitment to a small footprint for the gym means that every piece of equipment he brings in needs to really matter for our workouts. If it makes it to the floor of the Microgym, he promises it’s worth using.

Daniel’s been keeping me up to date on his progress towards his grand opening planned for mid November. I’ve toured the raw space (with no gym equipment yet installed) and it is bright and airy in a sweet spot through the light wood doors between the Side Street Tavern and Palace Clothing Shop on 34th just a half block off Belmont. I love his passion for creating a space full of friends and neighbors sweating it out together in the name of feeling good about ourselves, about our community gathering spaces and about our little corner of the planet.

In case you are wondering how established or new this greener gym is, this isn’t some never-before-tried, not-sure-if-it-will-work, just-sounds-good project. The first Green Micro Gym has been humming along producing a lot of its own power for the past two years in the 1200 block of Alberta.

When the owner of the original Green Microgym couldn’t find the kind of give-back-to-the-grid equipment that he was looking for, he did what Portland is known for, he designed it himself just like our Roost sponsors over at Clever Cycles who scour the whole planet for useful bikes and bike gear and then make or have made for them the items that they know are needed but, for some strange reason, aren’t on the planet yet.

Seems like this world should be full of space efficient gyms that give back to the grid by now (and lots of swap shops too!), but if great ideas have to get up and going first somewhere, I’m glad they all show up in our part of Portland. I’m also glad I can round the corner and pop into a place as convenient as the corner coffee shop for a different kind of pick-me-up.

With lots of gratitude in my heart to everyone who supported the Swap Shop as we got up and running 3 years ago, I knew I needed to be a founding member of the local Green Microgym too. It took me less than 5 minutes to go on line and put my name in the hat. Now I’m just waiting for the doors to open. For founding gym members the monthly is exactly the same as our current co-op fee $30. That equipment has to get paid for somehow, so the joining fee is $100 (with breaks for couples and families joining together.)

Sorry, the small footprint of a micro gym doesn’t allow for a supervised kids play area while you work out. But the gym is open 5am-11pm so you can jog over before the kids get up or after they go to bed. Having a great gym right around the corner is just a little more incentive to make good enough friends with another co-op member that you can trade off watching each other’s kids in our play space while you each get away for to even out the way all your muscles already get used lifting and wiping and chasing the next generation.

Now that Daniel is a Roost sponsor, I’ll be keeping you posted on the progress of the innovative new Green Microgym down the street. Send your friends and neighbors his way just like you do for the swap shop. We are all better off for knowing each other and caring about each other’s success.

Dan’s super busy right now getting it all in place for November but happy to answer your questions if you give him a call . . .

First there was just a whole lot of dress up going on and then . . . the talking and planning started.

“Mom, guess what I’m going to be for Halloween” is a conversation starter I have heard in January, February and March – all with a different description of the coveted costume to be.

While this week’s post is conveniently planned nice and close to Halloween, it could work just as well any time of the year. If you don’t sew or don’t sew well enough to make that elaborate thing your son or daughter is cooking up for All Hallow’s Eve or just for their latest fantasy adventure, you are going to be very glad to know Heidi Witte and her beautiful micro business, Humble Luna .

I get asked how I do all the things I do and my best answer so far is . . . by not doing a whole lot of other things that I could easily talk myself into thinking I should be capable of. I have for a long time now made a firm commitment not to bake, not to garden and not to sew. So far I have been sticking to my convictions really well (just drive by my house and you can verify my no gardening creed).

But I love a great Halloween costume as much as the next person (maybe more) and I’m willing to put good money towards it (especially if that money stays local). But who do you go to when you want a Halloween costume made or a little more than you can handle alteration done to add that tail or wings or wild, whirling thing to the garment you already have?

Your journey can start in our arts and crafts room on Wednesday afternoons after school or with a quick phone call or email to Heidi after you browse her shop on Etsy to see her style. When Heidi isn’t mixing paints and helping little hands with glue in our Wednesday afternoon arts and crafts meet up 3:30-4:30, she’s dreaming up new designs for hats and tails and other such things for her growing business selling whimsical designs for children in person and on line.

She’s been making costumes long enough that she can estimate the cost of materials and hours of labor easily to let you know how much your dreamed-up creation will cost. She is also happy to do alterations on things that you already have for less cost.

Heidi worked for the Portland Children’s Museum in a textile internship for over a year and through that really perfected the art of making costumes that last through rough use and growth spurts (good news if you are spending money on a custom piece.) For the museum, she had to design and produce super safe costumes to fit their smallest visitor to the older siblings and everyone in between with easy, kid-managable Velcro so they could keep and use every costume for a very long time. Visit the museum today and many of her costumes from 2004 are still in use. The dragon tails she makes and sells now came from needing to develop museum costumes that are super fun but don’t go on your head and are easy to take on and off.

By connecting with her directly, you can save money over what a store would charge you for her pieces on consignment and still help her see more of the revenue than she gets from sales through Portland stores or Etsy.

She’ll be turning the kind of talent she shared with the Children’s Museum towards our dress up bins and adding some not-for-swap costumes for all of us to share. Already, one of her wonderful red dragon tails is hanging out on our stage with more on the way.

And those daughters of mine that keep changing their Halloween plans by the month, the day and sometimes the hour? I don’t think I could have loved the Swap Shop any more than I did a few years ago when I had already bought my younger daughter Claire a pretty darn cool witch costume when she found an even cooler, full sized Scooby Doo get up in the swap clothing room. Instead of having to tell her, “No I already bought you a costume,” I got to just smile and say, “Sure, trade as often as you want. I’m sure someone else will love that witch costume.”

I think several other people already have. I saw it come back through the swap room just the other day. If you have the Scooby Doo costume and need it altered to fit or are ready to pass on, you know where to go.

Not everyone knows that we have costumes that we don’t put out for dress up (because they have head pieces or are for adults or babies) in two big blue tubs on the highest shelf across from the kid’s clothing tubs. Our adult racks are thinned out enough that we will start hanging costumes on the clothing rack closest to the door now that Halloween is drawing near for everyone to look through. This is the best time of year to add anything you have that could be shared for Halloween with other families.

Happy Haunting to all! Thank you Heidi for all you do for our co-op and for being a Roost Sponsor for our youth.

The world is divided up into lots of different types of people. This isn’t the biggest or most important distinction between people by a long shot – but there are definitely those of us that really, really like to shop and those of us that shop only for the “necessities.”

Audrey, the dental hygienist at Belmont Family Dentistry, I’m going to guess, loves to shop. I got my first teeth cleaning with her this week (nice and painless) and it came with unsolicited gushing praise for her long time favorite store on Belmont: Noun: A Person’s Place for Things – conveniently just as I was getting ready to write Noun up as our latest Roost local business sponsor.

Having two kids and being a big kid at heart, I’ve bought my share of St. Cupcakes but, not being the biggest of shoppers, up until now, I’ve only just glanced at everything Stephanie Shelton, owner of Noun has gathered together in the well decorated space she shares with all those frosted cupcakes across from Zupans at 33rd and Belmont. Ever wondered why the combination of cupcakes with another store? Jami, the founder of St Cupcakes, and Stephanie, the creator of Noun, are best friends from Ohio that moved out to Portland together right out of college.

Since not every one of us was born to shop, I feel obligated to share about Noun in such a way that speaks to all of us even though decorative items for purchase make some of us dream in Technicolor and others of us can easily walk by unaffected by the lure of beautiful things.

The best thing I knew to do for a fair review is to stroll into Noun: A Person’s Place for Things one afternoon (right past the display of St. Cupcakes) with an open mind, a big heart and the kind of bubbling-from-your-belly curiosity that could just choke nine lives out of a cat.

And before you know it, not being the decorating or shop-for-pleasure type myself, I’d fallen in love. Not only with the store (although if you read about it on Yelp, there’s a great big love fest going on in cyber space about this place), not just with the idea of how cool it could be to be Stephanie Sheldon (Noun’s creator and owner who is really talented at picking out great looking things). It’s bigger than that. I’ve fallen in love with Portland all over again, just like the first time I came to visit from the heart of corporate Silicon Valley and discovered that Portland is a place where you can chat with the restaurant owner who really cares about his food, his friends and his customers.

Living in Portland is about food and friends and, in small or large ways, being customers of what we believe in so our money makes some change in the world.

Call it a need, a desire or anything else you want to call it, but I’m a believer now that Noun holds an important place in our corner of the universe. Get to know Stephanie just a bit and you’ll understand how some vintage furniture, sweet, locally made jewelry, stacks of cards doubling as art and funky old purple refrigerators can put smiles on people’s faces while waging a stealth campaign for sustainability.

First there’s the reuse and recycle aspect of what Stephanie is doing. Her time is split between being behind the counter in her store (which she loves) and going out, mostly to estate sales, to pick up local, long held treasures – old sets of glasses, surprisingly popular manual typewriters and odd collections of this and that.

Then there’s the direct support of our local economy. All the jewelry for sale at Noun comes from local artisans. Much of the art for her cards is locally made and produced too.

What I really love about Stephanie’s way of life is that she’s taken the time to ask herself, not just once but a bunch of times until she has worked out the answer . . . how much is enough?

How much is enough to charge for an old fashioned calligraphy pen? Stephanie smiles when ever someone points out that she’d be “better off” running her shop on the west side where her $18 item would easily sell for $50. She smiles a little more when someone tells her she’d get more traffic if her store was over on Hawthorne. She smiles the most when she goes home at the end of the day, having greeted every customer, chatted with her favorite regular shoppers and really gotten to know someone new to town instead of running around trying to get bigger and bigger and sell more and more.

She’s not stressed. She’s not frazzled. She’s not making a fortune but she’s also not needing to spend a fortune or a good chunk of her life energy chasing the next elusive level of success.

Happily, inner southeast Portland is a place where Stephanie and all the rest of us have a really fair chance of leveling out – living comfortably somewhere between underdone and over-the-top. It feels good (even to an only moderate shopper like me) to look around in Noun surrounded by an eclectic gathering of things that, thanks to Stephanie’s fun eye for objects, all look like they belong in our neighborhood: new things, old things, and odd things, all reasonably priced for what they are – considering the work that went into getting them there for all of us to share.

There are baskets of things for just a dollar scattered around so you can bring your kids to shop with you (if you can get past the cupcakes in the front lobby.) While there are a few pieces of jewelry and pieces of furniture that sell for hundreds of dollars, the majority of what you will walk around and see won’t break the bank and will bring some whimsy and spunk to your home or to the ones you love.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: in my perfect, more sustainable world, there will still be a place for the Fred Meyers and Targets and IKEAs of the world (we can’t recycle and reuse what we already have forever) but that space will be much smaller and we’ll be way more connected to people like Stephanie at Noun on 33rd and Belmont and Lisa, the new owner at the kids and maternity consignment/resale shop: Small Wonders on 80th and Foster.

Looking first to the objects and items we already have in our co-op and in local resale stores is a great way to support each other, support local businesses and support a simpler, more social way of life.

Cupcake or no cupcake, stop in and say hi to Stephanie when you are walking along Belmont and do take a trip out Foster Road to Small Wonders to see how Lisa is doing. Real sustainability is about figuring out what sustains us without over taxing our planetary resources, our bank account or our day-to-day.

Lucky for us that people like Stephanie and Lisa like southeast Portland so much. We’re glad to have you in the neighborhood, or in Lisa’s case, nearby the neighborhood.

You can check out all our local business Roost sponsors on our web site, add your favorite business recommendations to the growing data base on our Yahoo list and Yelp away about all sorts of places including our co-op thanks to a new posting by co-op member Carissa Martos.

Thanks Carissa for reaching out and thank you to everyone who networks through our co-op for better connections and resources. I know I feel richer for it and I hope you do too.

When Swap Shop and Roost board members and I started walking from business to business around the inner south east last summer looking for community minded businesses willing to sponsor youth at The Roost, I had no idea the great twists and turns this fundraising effort would take for our co-op and for my own family.

As we are about to round into our second year singing the praises of local businesses, I am astounded at how much I have learned (about old fashioned pianos and car care and more) and delighted at the resources that my family and all our families have at our finger tips. I couldn’t be more grateful for our Roost sponsors than on one fateful weekend last spring.

My kids are true community kids. I’m pretty sure they spend more time at Sunnyside Park, Sunnyside School and inside the Sunnyside United Methodist Church building than they do in their own home.

So it was with ease that I asked a co-op member to watch my youngest daughter Claire and her friend at our Saturday night dinner theater performance at the swap shop while I finished closing up the big swap day at the April Useful Goods Exchange.

When my cell phone rang about 30 minutes after I said goodbye to Claire, I answered and heard big crying in the background. At first I just assumed I was hearing a toddler at the swap shop. But it was Claire I was hearing who, in an act of strange physics, slipped on our wooden slide in the big kids room in such a way that she broke out a big part of her two front teeth.

I didn’t have to take two steps to find people at the exchange willing to close up for me and I rushed over to help with the ice pack and drying tears and figuring out what to do next.

Of course, this was the weekend that our regular dentist went to the beach with out his cell phone charger. So this was the weekend that I called our Roost sponsor dentist, Aaron Tinkle of Belmont Family Dentistry, and got a first hand experience of his calm, friendly, easy manner.

Before you start feeling sorry for Claire, let me assure you that, to an eight year old kid, showing off her big front teeth gap and then her new front teeth caps to classmates, family and the whole dental staff at Belmont Family Dentistry far and above made up for the downsides of the incident.

I’ve always regretted not taking any high school or college chemistry classes but I feel like I got a whole chemistry lesson watching Aaron mix up just the right colors for Claire’s remade sections of her teeth. If you look at her today with that big 3rd grade, almost 4th grade, toothy grin, you wouldn’t even know she knocked them out.

And how good of a dentist is Aaron Tinkle for kids? I think Claire likes him almost as much as she likes her third grade teacher so, after all the bonding they did over fixing her front teeth, it was easy to start making him our family dentist.

And it’s a good thing Claire likes and trusts her dentist (and his staff) because when we went for her regular check up last week . . . my car battery died. We ended up walking up hill to 60th and Belmont from the Swap Shop (good thing they give out prizes at the end of your visit) and when she heard the news that I’d be spending her appointment getting a jump start instead of waiting right there with her she skipped ahead of me on the side walk and said, “Mom, I’ll be with Dr. Tinkle. I’ll be fine.”

OK, so maybe I’m just the sentimental type, but somewhere between this little scene and watching my oldest daughter, just newly in middle school, make her own appointments with the staff at Parkside Orthodontics, I really do feel like I live in a village.

And, as much as I enjoy the “village” life, I’m also glad that we live in a big city and have great specialists like Dr. Amna Shabani at Children’s Dentistry right over the bridge in Vancouver. I know our Swap Shop board member Karen Ehn recomends Amna any
chance she gets and is very grateful for all she does for her sons Charlie and Henry.

So, whether you are making a planned appointment or needing urgent help over a holiday weekend these three dental offices come highly mom recommended:
